1st Sikh in decades graduates Army officer school – AP
The American Army (hoorah) when it formed was not known for its uniform, but for its perseverance and strength. Later, after the formation of the republic, it’s first capital in New York city, West Point Military Academy, or Army School, formed March 16, 1802, to train its officers, required standard uniforms. It’s first Jewish graduate was Samuel Levy who was among its first graduating class, 10/11/1802. Many famous Americans graduated from there and even General Robert E. Lee was once its commandant, whose citizenship was later returned to him, a terrible “enemy” during the Civil War. Later its first African-American grad was H.O. Flipper in June of 1877. The first Army-Navy football game, was on 11/29/1890 and today played on Buffalo Soldiers Field, named after the then segregated Army, many of those soldiers served on the frontier of the American West defending the union of new states that resulted after the civil war, a war I sometimes suspect began with the bombardment of teacher by student and the production of weapons of mass destruction across the Hudson River in the West Point Foundry, in the town said so-named by General Washington, Cold Spring, NY. Indeed, we Americans have had people of different backgrounds, faiths, countries of origin, all dedicated to the proposition that we, the many, find equality in our, yet new, country.
