Aye there’s the rub. “western Virginia” today West Virginia contained the George Washington’s selected Federal Arsenal raided in the ill-fated “John Brown’s Raid” of October, 1859. “The arsenal contained 100,000 muskets and rifles.” – Wikipedia  Newly manufactured “percussion caps” revolutionized rifles from the black powder flash in the pan to a primer on a “nipple”. It was thought they would extinguish much of the wildlife of America also. Former West Point Commandant Robert E. Lee was in charge of the capture and trial of John Brown and his men, many hung for the conspiracy. Burned down in the civil war, today covered in flood sediments.

…in Harper’s Ferry, W.VA. on the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, now three states, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
