Stony Brook University did a long-term study of the use of concrete, a catalyst and coal ash which did not affect the soil it was in. Proposed was sea walls and other mediating structures. I read a woman in a private company had invented a mixing machine that incorporated small pieces of metal, based on stress and need, in the concrete as it was transported to the forms. The shapes were researched and appeared shaped like carabiners, different size and diameters, allowed concrete in new forms, now stronger than with rebar. Perhaps a stronger “slurry wall” would also be built, and the interface at bedrock, more secure than the flat-ends of a rebar cage. Law requires rebar to be cleaned, labor intensive, when reused for example in a bridge. There was a multiple machine that uses high pressure water to break, remove old concrete and clean the rebar using water pressure. Faster than by hand, the concrete is poured as part of this “train”, which however is very loud.

From some of the research I’ve managed to find out about its captain Leman Chapman Urquhart, born in Canada on Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick in the village of Castalia, it can be seen that he was not the regular captain of the ship. It had many previous captains, for a short time, according to the record read. The ship itself was laid down in 1903 in West Chester, Pennsylvania and I recall converted, perhaps during its construction, from coal to oil. He was my maternal grandfather’s brother, Lawrence George Urquhart’s older brother and other siblings grew up on the island, though in my grandfather’s time Lawrence enlisted in the Canadian Army fighting in Europe when he was, we hope, 16 (not 15). Leman C. Urquhart was a “Master Mariner” according to his business card and employed as a harbor pilot in the Savannah, Georgia harbor. They had both worked for “Savannah Lines” I think I recall him saying. My grandfather was later a crash-boat operator for flights out of New York near the current LaGuardia Airport. The City of Atlanta berthed in New York City and Savannah, Georgia making regular trips between the two cities. The NY Harbor-Sandy Hook Pilot’s Association thought, war declared, ships tied up in various rules and applications and perhaps having a harbor pilot as the captain, City of Atlanta may have an easier egress from the port of New York. Later correspondence about its wreckage stated since it was sunk purposefully to be a hazard to shipping, it may have been cleared by wire to some degree and is still cited as a hazard. The whole area off the North Carolina coast is a danger to magnetic compass bearings, warning on the navigation charts that anomalous magnetic readings are likely to be encountered.
At the base of a flagpole I recall is printed his name and other islanders who died for our freedom. We were then visiting the house my grandfather had bought in North Head, Grand Manan Island, N.B. As youngsters too young to travel much there, he later sold it to two school teachers on the island. The flagpole is just out-front of the church between two brass cannons, marked “Eccles”.

Brought to their attention, perhaps “Lehman Urquart” that is the Leman Chapman Urquhart name will be corrected in the second edition.

We measure it to record properties, build roads, etc., infrared (visible lasers for tunnels) “tacheometers” or “total stations” are now under $4000. Very accurate.

I watched a documentary (Catholics, Elke Sommer, et al.) about it once. At the time of construction various groups and organizations donated a stone or two(?) to the Washington Monument. One, contributed by US Catholics, was stolen and reputed to be dumped into the Potomac River, and never a part of the Washington Monument. Maybe they could find it and replace the cracked one from the donated stone. If you know more about it, please leave me a comment.

I just came back from there, near Norristown, PA. It’s next to Willow Grove where VP Biden’s wife is from. The NAVY has left the joint reserve services there and I was part of an archaeology survey for cultural resources required before it’s turned over in part of all (8000 ft. runway) to the local governmen. I could see how growing up there as a person of color might have been a problem, a religious area, or so it appears by the various religious orgaizations as “business” signs along the various highways, something can’t say I’ve see that much elsewhere. Very suburban about 20 miles from Philadelphia, it’s also becoming very large scale business centered. “Vertical Screen” 24/7 “background” checking “green” world headquarters opened on the “brownfield” site of former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) there in Warminster, PA.
The brother-in-law of the now Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, from this street in the Bronx, perished crashing off of it a number of years ago in a late model Land Rover. Built originally for the NY Thruway, it has become an interstate and much of the I dare say Nation’s commerce is tied to it. I work for a company researching it, and it’s unique, eligible for the National Register, because no other bridge has been built like it! It sits on “floating” concrete caissons in the Hudson River, perhaps, built in the Cold War to be “dropped” as a “Great Chain” across the Hudson River used to stop the British Navy in a number of Hudson River locations in the American Revolution, allowing small boat passage and designed to thwart large ships-of-the line. By the way this page “crashes” my computer until I used Firefox to block scripts and plugins. Wonder what that’s about? I observe the overfilled “park and rides” and bus lots in Rockland County and think, with all the traffic, this, with light surface rail, express bus, and even foot-travel over the river, a welcomed idea. Then onto a monorail to Albany!
